Welcome to my journey in education.

Orientation and Induction

Today I had my first ride in the staff bus to one of the campuses of the Emirati National Schools. The bus is an air-conditioned Ashok Leyland school bus — think of a South African Combi, but stretched to seat up to 30 people. This will be my daily mode of transport to and from school in the mornings, a trip of about eight minutes.

A large part of today was devoted to embracing the culture of the Emirati National Schools. We visited the National Archive in Abu Dhabi, and from the moment we arrived, the much-talked-about Emirati hospitality was evident. The Emiratis clearly take pride in their nation and its symbols, and the Archive building itself is a testament to that pride.

Inside, we found a pristine environment with fascinating exhibits on display. The actual archives are well organised and accessible. For a country officially established in 1972, they have gathered a remarkable collection. Their heritage record stretches as far back as evidence of early human presence in the region, tracing the centuries through to the unification of the seven emirates that form the UAE today.

Later, back at one of the campuses, the most important points of the day’s lessons and discussions were reinforced — driving home the values and principles at the heart of the Emirati National Schools.

Tomorrow, we’ll be at the primary campus where I will undergo my medical tests — the final step before I can get my ID. I’ll keep you posted!
